These artworks are intended to bring a little of Britain’s countryside into the places we live. Hanging quietly within a home, they offer a lasting reminder of wildflower meadows, changing seasons and the quiet beauty that can easily pass unnoticed.
A Little History
Every flower has a story. Here are three that stayed with us.
Bluebells - for centuries, bluebell sap was prized as a remarkably strong natural glue, used to secure feathers to the shafts of arrows. Those arrows were carried into battles such as Towton in 1461, still regarded as the bloodiest battle ever fought on English soil.
Even the quietest woodland can carry echoes of history.
Cornflowers - during the Napoleonic Wars, Queen Louise of Prussia is said to have hidden her children among flowering cornfields as Napoleon’s army advanced. The cornflower became a symbol of hope, resilience and protection, remaining an enduring emblem long after the war had ended.
Sometimes hope hides in the simplest places.
Early Purple Orchid - the tubers of the Early Purple Orchid were once dried and ground into a flour know as salep, valued for its restorative qualities and traded across Europe for centuries. Today, the orchid has become a symbol ancient, unimproved meadows - places that have survived largely unchanged for generations.
Some of the rarest discoveries survive only because the landscape around them has been left alone.
