Beneath a heavy Teesdale sky, a handful of poppies refuse to disappear into the darkening field. Their red petals are loose, fragile and almost battered by the weather, yet they remain the first thing the eye finds. Red Against the Storm is about that small act of defiance: colour surviving where everything else seems to be turning grey.
The work began with a photograph made while walking with Vera. The landscape was gradually stripped back towards black and white, allowing the stems, seed heads and approaching clouds to become harsher and more photographic. The poppies were then developed through layers of red, retaining their movement and imperfection rather than turning them into neat botanical specimens.
Poppies have long carried associations with memory, sleep, loss and renewal. Here, they are neither decorative nor sentimental. They stand exposed in the field—delicate, untidy and extraordinarily persistent. The darkness is winning, but not completely.
This is a unique, one-of-one original artwork created as part of Walking with Vera. Presented in a slim black frame with a generous pale mount, it is ready to hang and supplied with a Certificate of Authenticity and a personal signed note.
