Among the Shadows began with my own photograph of Lords and Ladies discovered while walking with Vera.
Also known as Arum maculatum, it is one of Britain’s most distinctive woodland plants. Its hooded flowers emerge from the shade in spring, followed later by brilliant clusters of red berries. Its beauty is deceptive: every part of the plant is poisonous.
I developed the photograph through many stages, deepening the woodland shadows and drawing out the colour, texture and sculptural shape of the plant. The finished artwork captures that contrast between darkness and colour, attraction and danger.
This is a one-of-one photographic artwork, produced once only on Hahnemühle German Etching paper. It is signed, mounted and presented in a light oak frame under real glass, ready to hang.
